My husband spotted a sign for "The Proper Pie Company" on US27 on his way home from work and stopped off to check it out.
Now the pies from this"gem" have become a constant Friday night dinner staple in our house.
The Proper Pie Company owner, Derek Gibson, quit his corporate job in London and looked for a different challenge.
He moved from the UK to Florida about four years ago.
He started out attending Farmers markets selling frozen entrees and family size british style pies.
A customer made the suggestion to make the pies in an individual pub size and the suggestion has paid off.
Derek made 36 individually hand-made double crust pies for the next farmers market and they sold out within half an hour.
The Proper Pie Company is now selling all over Florida and are working hard to keep up with demand.
They attend the St Augustine Old City farmers market,
Fernandina Beach farmers market and the Saturday Morning Market in St Petersburg.
Derek's tells us that the best selling items are the Cornish Pasties and the Steak & Guinness Pies.
The most popular in our house is the Steak and Kidney pie.
The pies are authentic handmade pies that have a wonderful flaky crust and are stuffed with meat and gravy.
Cornish pasty Steak & Gunness
The Proper Pie Company motto Bake fresh and they will come.... is certainly holding true for this family run business.
The Proper Pie Company is a family run business located near the Posner Center on US27 at
145 Ridge Center Drive, Roseberry Square, Davenport, FL, 33837.
The specialize in British style pies and other traditional British Fayre.

Proper British Pies are absolutely DELISH!!! This owner and his wife bake these wonderfully authentic, handmade, gravy filled pies.
This is the monthly staple that our family specifically goes to this Farmers Market to purchase. Every month the owners try out new and sometimes non-traditional flavors which are great for variety. But we do have our favorites:
-Steak and potato pie with Guinness beer (Ding, Ding, Ding...my uber fav!)
-Chicken Portobello mushroom pie
-Steak and black pepper pie
-Steak and Portobello mushroom pie
These all have a super flaky crust, bake for a couple of minutes, are perfectly seasoned and packed with meat and veg! Just YUMMY!!!
The owners also make a great Shepherd's Pie, Scotch Egg and actually introduced me to a Cornish Pasty which has me craving more just writing about it!
The last couple of visits to the market the Proper Pie folks have had a special of buy 5 items for $25 bucks, which is a discount of the $7.50 normal asking price for their items. Sale Whoo hoo!
You don't have to visit the market however, the website seems to have a good ordering and shipping mechanism, but I am not reviewing that part of this biz...just sharing the awesomeness of this authentic, owner inspired comfort food!

Looking for a proper British pie? Look no further than The Proper Pie Company! This bakery is true to its name, offering meaty savory pies and heavy sweet ones. They travel around to lots of different markets around Florida. How can you not be drawn to a table groaning under the weight of loads and loads of British pies?!
I went to have a look without necessarily intending to purchase anything, but I was convinced as soon as I saw the offerings listed on signs hanging around the booth. Steak pies, vegetable pies, chicken pies, fruit pies... oh my, all that pie! How to decide? I asked the lady working the booth what her favorite pie is, and she suggested the steak and black pepper pie. She only had one left, so I snatched it up.
I popped my pie in the oven - 350 for about fifteen minutes to warm it through. The crust is really high and flaky on top and I couldn't believe how much meat she packed in the pie! Lots and lots of really tender beef. There was a TON of black pepper in the pie and it made the filling really spicy. Perhaps there were just a tad too many peppercorns - I found myself picking them out as I was nearing the end of my pie. Also wished there were a bit more gravy. But all in all, success!
When I see The Proper Pie Company next I'll definitely take them up on their five pies for $25 offer!! Can't wait to try one of their curry pies and a veg pie and a sweet option. Plus they have Scottish eggs, which aren't my favorite, and shepherd's pie, too. [insert British accent] A proper pie indeed!

Outstanding food! Nothing artificial. All "home-made." Wonderful pastry crusts. Thick chunks of meat. Have tried the chicken & aspargus, chicken and broccoli, and beef shepherd pie. Bought some to freeze. Just pop them in the over to heat to a golden, bubbly brown. Also has a limited supply of some imported favorites
